The Lifespan of a Pet Parakeet

Parakeets are one of the most popular pet options. They first originated in Australia, but are now available in most parts of the world. They are very small in size at around 7 inches long on an average and weigh around 40 to 50 grams. Also, thanks to captive breeding, they are now available in a variety of fascinating colours.

Apart from this, parakeets are optimistic creatures and have a very positive vibe. They are very active in nature and are friendly with humans as well as other birds. They are easy to take care of and can be maintained at a low cost. However, the only drawback of having a pet parakeet is that they supposedly have a short lifespan.

Parakeet Pet Lifespan

Many people believe that parakeets bred in captivity have a longer lifespan than the ones that grow up in the wild. This is mainly because parakeets in captivity are safe from wild predators, natural diseases, infections, and other similar factors.

The average lifespan of a pet parakeet is said to be around 7 to 15 years. However, there have been cases in which a pet parakeet was recorded to be more than 20 years old. Therefore, this only proves the fact that taking better care of the parakeet can increase its lifespan.

Wild Parakeet Lifespan

When compared to other feathered creatures, parakeets are said to have a shorter lifespan. For instance, a penguin in captivity can live up to 35 years while a parrot can live for more than 50 years. However, the lifespan of a parakeet completely depends on the habitat it is growing in.

Parakeets living in the wild are said to have a lifespan of around 10 years on an average. This is mainly because they are prone to natural enemies such as eagles, vultures and snakes. Therefore, for a parakeet, the chances of survival in the wild become very low.

Apart from this, parakeets require a good amount of water to survive and hence, live in places where there is plenty of water available. If their natural habitat cannot provide them with their basic necessities, the lifespan naturally decreases.

Factors Affecting Pet Parakeet Lifespan

Parakeets are small and delicate creatures. They are relatively smart and friendly with humans. Hence, they make excellent pets. However, there are many factors that may affect a pet parakeet's life. These factors should be known to every pet parakeet owner so that they can take care of their pet parakeet better.

  • Parakeets require plenty of water to be healthy. If sufficient water is not provided, it may cause dehydration and can be quite fatal
  • The lifespan of a parakeet is also affected if a proper diet is not provided
  • Parakeets tend to be more happy and healthy if they are allowed to fly around once every few days
  • If your parakeet is motionless and silent, then it may need medical attention immediately
  • Parakeets cannot survive long in extreme conditions, so make sure the pet parakeet is kept somewhere in a comfortable temperature
  • Do not scare or threaten the parakeet as it may have a severe effect on their lifespan
